OVERVIEW
The Davao City coastal road bypass project will traverse from Roxas Avenue to Bago Aplaya, cutting through NHA Kadayawan Homes, Matina Aplaya, and Bolton Isla. Three roundabouts (or rotundas) will be installed in the 35-kilometer coastal stretch at Roxas Avenue, Times Beach area, and Matina Aplaya.
The increasing population and continuous development of the Davao Region has led to the worsening traffic congestion within its major roads. The coastal road project will certainly abate and address the traffic congestion within the city.
SOLUTION
TenCate geocontainment solution for coastal and marine application has been chosen by the Department of Public Works and Highways for the initial phase of the project. The use of Geotube® GT750M allows the protection of exposed soils from erosion. Here, in-situ sand filling of the Geotube® container (in lieu of core rocks) makes it more economical and guarantees speedy construction of the seawall rather than the conventional method of importing and hand-laying core rocks. Installation of additional protection geotextiles makes it a permanent mass gravity structure for the project.
Project Description
The initial phase of the project consists of reclaiming 30 meters from the shoreline which serves as a working platform for the coastal road project.
The use of Geotube® GT Marine engineered tubes as a seawall containment system allows the use of readily available sand on-site which lessen the quantity of rock boulders to be used.
Construction
The work consists of furnishing and laying Geotube® GT 750M and protection geotextiles using A-frames for alignment with a primary function as an edge dyke and revetment protection.
The Geotube® GT 750M is filled hydraulically by pumping sand slurry through the filling ports.
To allow flow of fill material, the fill is in the form of sand/sea water slurry. The permeable Geotube® allows the excess water to pass through the geotextile skin while sand is retained within the Geotube®. The area within the confinement of the tubes is then filled with residual soil to complete the platform.
The use of Geotube® GT 750M speeds up the completion of the project with less man power requirement as the installation is fully mechanical.
This project has won the 2019 International Achievement Award (IAA) - Award of Excellence.
