Confining water turbidity and sediment pollution with silt curtains
Turbidity control is the use of a geosynthetic or silt curtain system that is deployed for the purpose of confining water turbidity within the marine construction areas. Water turbidity occurs as a result of the suspension of sediments and solids during dredging and filling works. These suspended solids may be carried by tidal or other currents to environmentally sensitive areas away from the construction areas.
TenCate Geotube® Silt Curtain systems is an effective solution for turbidity control while preventing or confining sediment pollution. TenCate Geotube® Silt Curtain is a custom designed curtain screen fabricated from high strength geotextiles that is assembled with floats, weights and other accessories. The silt curtain, also known as the turbidity control curtain, hangs from the water surface and is stabilized with a flotation and mooring system.
The function of the silt curtain is to confine turbid water within a work area and prevent sediment pollution outside the work area. The use of TenCate Geotube® Silt Curtain is usually mandated by environmental regulations related to water pollution in marine construction sites including dredging and reclamation works in waterways and impoundments.
